Lightning and Surge Protection in
Photovoltaic Installations
This article discusses about the scientific background and essential assumptions to be taken into account in case of the lightning and surge protection in photovoltaic installations. The aspects of standardization are also considered. conventional low-voltage power distribution systems
(CLVPDSs) standards are used as a guide and changed also as some characteristics of PVIs are different from that of CLVPDS. This system is applied to a applied to an actual grid-connected PVI called the Univer Project. There is an increase of safety and availability which can be considered to cover the extra cost of installation. the surge withstand capability of the PVI is also considered.
The PHOTOVOLTAIC installations are usually located in roofs and facades of buildings or as free-standing installations in unsheltered and
extended areas and as such is exposed and vulnerable to direct lightning
flashes and surges. The magnetic fields (MFs) of lightning flashes can damage the PVI.
SURGES AND RESULTING DAMAGES IN A PVI
The lightning electromagnetic impulse and the switching electromagnetic impulse are the cause of most of the electrical and/or electronic equipment damage of a PVI. The lightning can not only can cause failure of its
electrical/electronic system, but also damage the operators. There can be loss of human life ; loss of service to the public ; loss of cultural heritage ; loss of economical value .
