LDR is an abbreviation of light dependent resistance. Also known as photoresistor or photocell. Its symbol is shown in the following figure:

LDR Sensor is used for light detection, internally has a resistance that is sensitive to light as shown in the symbol. Each time the light falls on the LDR sensor, its resistance begins to decrease and when it reaches darkness, its resistance begins to increase. Using the resistance value can be easily detected if there is light or not.
It is normally used in light-activated switches. For example, you have seen automatic street lights, which turn on at night and turn off automatically when it is time of day. LDR sensors are used in these street lights.
