CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION
I.1. BACKGROUND

As it is stipulated by the law of KIGALI INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (KIST) that for every student completing the undergraduate degree course must undergo a practical training, the internship training is a vital step that all students completing their University studies must do. It involves a specific compulsory attachment in public or private organizations locally or overseas during their period of studies.
The students’ involvement in internship training will be assessed and considered as partial fulfillment for the award of bachelor’s degree in the FACULTY OF ENGINEERING, DEPARTMENT of ELECTRICAL and ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING. The practical training also prepares students for working environment.
The internship was conducted in LAKE KIVU SERENA HOTEL / MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT from 20th September 2010 to 26Th November 2010.
This report therefore, gives a brief presentation of LAKE KIVU SERENA HOTEL / MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT, a description of its functioning and the interns critics. During this period of ten weeks, I did my internship within LAKE KIVU SERENA HOTEL / MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT where I had the opportunity to deepen our knowledge in electrical machines application and selection, motor control system, power system protection, industrial distribution system, illumination engineering, faults analysis and repair, equipments selection and their application
I.2. AIM OF THE INTERNSHIP
The major aim of the internship was to enable the student to put into practice and to understand better the theories learnt in different courses.
I.3.OBJECTIVES OF THE INTERNSHIP
• To know more advanced skills about electrical machines application and selection, motor control system, power system protection, industrial distribution system, illumination engineering, faults analysis and repair.
• To identify and learn more about what is done by MAINTENANCE Department.
• To put into practice what was theoretically taught in class.
CHAPTER II: ABOUT THE LAKE KIVU SERENA HOTEL
II.1. SERENA HOTEL DESCRIPTION

Serenely sited on the white sandy shores of Lake Kivu, the sixth largest lake in Africa, and surrounded by extensive tropical gardens, the tastefully open-plan Lake Kivu Serena Hotel offers the ideal week-end escape.
Within several hours drive of both the Rwandan capital, and the glorious Volcanoes National Park (home of the world famous mountain gorillas), it overlooks its own private beach and offers; 66 luxury rooms, executive suites and family accommodation, a panoramic restaurant, indoor and beachside bars, a luxury swimming pool, and the ‘Maisha' Health Centre (offering an extensive range of health and beauty regimes, boating, swimming, volley ball, tennis, fishing, hiking and trekking). The hotel also boasts a world-class fully-integrated Conference Centre.
The hotel stands on the shores of Lake Kivu, just outside the small town of Gisenyi, which is 160km from Kigali (20 minute's flight from Kigali International Airport) and minutes from the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and the city of Goma.

CHAPTER III: ENGINEERING SYSTEM IN LAKE KIVU SERENA HOTEL
III.1. BOILER MACHINES

The BOILER is the main important machine which makes other machine to work and to perform a real act.
Definition: The boiler machine is a machine generates the heat by using the fuel, water or woods.
There are two types of boiler : - Steam boiler -Thermo boiler
 Steam boiler: that boiler uses water which is heated at high temperature to get steam, it is composed of steam pressure regulator, pressure meter, security valve and distribution pipes; the steam begins to be produced at 80 and the maximum steam produced is 120bars, above this pressure boiler is turned off. The steam reaches machines through the pipes.
 Thermo boiler: That boiler uses oil which is heated at high temperature, from the storing reservoir fuel is pumped labeled 1 into the headed reservoir that has two float one to control on/off states of the pump, another one as indicator that shows the level of fuel contained inside the headed reservoir; this fuel from the headed labeled 2 after being filtered by means of three series filters. When the fuel is heated in the range between 800 to 1000c thermostat opens and allows the heated fuel to reach the electro valve then from there to the nozzle that injects the heated fuel at high pressure inside the outer cylinder where meet the arcing of the electrodes connected to the step up transformer 220/1500v and produces fire which heats up the inner cylinder to boil water in order to produce steam. In additional the strength of the flame is adjusted by increasing or reducing the higher pressure air by means of air regulation system, the air is produced by ventilation of the three phase induction motor. The heated fuels reach machines through the pipes and then return to the oil tank.
III.1.1.WORKING PRINCIPLE
The importance of this equipment is to generate the high steam pressure and to convey it to the other different machines through the pipes. When an electric driven pump is supplying, the water gets filled the pipes inside the boiler. There is an adequate ventilating air supply to the boiler chamber so that the fuel gets intensively burnt and water or thermal oil boiled at very high temperature and produced a high steam up to 10 bars and gets collected on carried through pipes towards the machines. Due to the losses along the pipes, the steam generated should be a bit great 10 bars. The impeller pumping system is especially used in the liquid transfer, the motor delivers the useful mechanical power and that power is transmitted to the system by the shaft to the impellers.
III.2. AIR COMPRESSOR
Air compressors prayed a role in cooling system as well as maintenance and are present in all departments.
Air compressor is a compressor that takes in air at atmospheric pressure and delivers it at a higher pressure. This compressed air is used for various activities within the company.
An air compressor is composed by: -Electrical motor, -Cylinder, -Piston, -Air filters, -Air valves, -Pressure valve and pressure meter, -Air tank, -Air inlet pipe and air outlet pipe, and-System of purge.
III.2.1. IT’S WORKING PRINCIPLES
An electrical motor is supplied by a three phase induction supply to turn in motion .This motor is coupled to a piston from which it aspirates air at atmospheric pressure and compresses it in the tank at pressure above atmospheric pressure.
The piston is the important component in working principles of the air compressor. As the piston moves dawn, the vacuum created allows outside air to push open the inlet valve (left). During compression (right), the inlet valve shuts while air is pressed into tank.
There are compressors that use rotating impellers to generate air pressure. Here, air pressure is increasing by reducing the size of the space that contains the air. Most of the compressors you will run across do this job with a reciprocating piston.
Like a small internal combustion engine, a conventional piston compressor has a crankshaft, a connecting rod and piston, a cylinder and a valve head. The crankshaft is driven by either an electric motor or a gas engine. While there are small models that are comprised of just the pump and motor, most compressors have an air tank to hold a quantity of air within a preset pressure range. The compressed air in the tank drives the air tools, and the motor cycles on and off to automatically maintain pressure in the tank.
At the top of the cylinder, you will find a valve head that hold the inlet and discharge valves. Both are simply thin metal flaps-one mounted underneath and one mounted on top of the valve plate. As the piston moves dawn, a vacuum is created above it. This allows outside air at atmospheric pressure to push open the inlet valve and fill the area above the piston. As the piston move up, the air /above it compresses, holds the inlet valve shut and pushes the discharge open. The air moves from the discharge port to the tank. With each stroke, more air enters the tank the pressure raises.
Compressors use a pressure switch to stop the motor when tank pressure reaches preset limit. Therefore, the air line will include a regulator that you set to match the pressure requirements of the tool you are using. A gauge before the regulator monitors tank pressure and a gauge after the regulator monitors air-line pressure. In addition, the tank has a safety valve that opens if the pressure switch malfunctions. The pressure switch may also incorporate an unloaded valve that reduces tank pressure when the compressor is turned off.
Other machines that are presents in engineering department are Lathe machine, Shaping machine, Radial drilling and puller machine, and Grinding machine.
Note that the above machines are for spare parts fabrications.
