LADAR
INTRODUCTION
LADAR “ Laser Detection And Ranging
Operates on same principle as that of RADAR
Combines capabilities of radar & Optical system
Operates at shorter wavelength
LASER SOURCES IN LADAR
Nd:YAG in military application (R=2000m to10k.m.)
Chemical lasers(penetrates through fog & smoke)
Solid state laser
Methods to Judge Distances with Ladar
1.Measuring the time between
transmission and return of a signal
2.Measuring the intensity of
the returned signal
3.Using stereo vision
4.Using Laser striping
5.Using optical flow
SCANNING PROBLEMS
WITH LADAR
1.Mixed Pixels
2.Reflectance Crosstalk
3.Temporal Mixing
4.Photon Noise
5.Intensity Drift
6.Dark Obstacles
7.Other Considerations
ADVANTAGES
Provides higher resolution
Very narrow beam spread
Fewer sources of interference
Better ability to track deccelerating object
DISADVANTAGES
¢ Depends on weather
¢ Depends on reflection of the surface
¢ Difficult to track the target
¢ Particles in air will affect the range
APPLICATIONS
Atmospheric pollution measurement
Construction imaging and mapping
Eye surgery
Land surveying
Mapping
Vehicle speed measurement
CONCLUSIONS
Ladar is, in the correct environment, better suited for speed detection
Ladar is not perfect, however
There is still room for Radar patrolling

The acronym of LADAR (Laser Detection and Ranging) is LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) which is an optical remote sensing technology that measures properties of scattered light to find range and/or other information of a distant target,Applications of LIDAR include ALSM (Airborne Laser Swath Mapping), laser altimetry or LIDAR Contour Mapping. and the range to an object is determined by measuring the time delay between transmission of a pulse and detection of the reflected signal
