Kung fu / Kungfu or Gung fu / Gongfu (Listeni / ˌkʌŋfuː / or / ˌkʊŋfuː /; 功夫, Pinyin: Gongfu) is a Chinese term referring to any study, learning or practice that requires patience, energy and time to finish. In its original sense, the Kung-Fu can refer to a discipline or competence achieved through hard work and practice, not necessarily the martial arts. The Chinese literal equivalent of "Chinese martial art" would be 中国 武術 Zhōngguó wǔshu. [1]
It is only at the end of the 20th century, this term has been used in relation to Chinese martial arts by the Chinese community. [2] in Western popular culture, the term "Kung fu" is often used as a term when specifically referring to Chinese martial arts. [3] the Oxford English Dictionary defines the term "Kung Fu" as "an art martial Chinese karate resembling mainly bare hands.". [4] This illustrates how the meaning of this term has been changed to English. The origin of this change can be attributed to misunderstanding or misinterpretation of the term through the subtitles of films or dubbing.
