The company's gears in Karnataka boosted nascent industrial activity as early as 1800, when the first sugar unit was established. In 1902, Karnataka registered another "mega watt size project" - Asia's first hydroelectric power station at Shivanasamudram, on the banks of the Cauvery River.

In fact, the pioneering spirit of Karnataka in the field of power has resulted in several important milestones. Karnataka was the first to embark on alternating current, when the lighting scheme of the city of Bengaluru was completed.

Karnataka had the world's longest transmission line in 1902, from Shivanasamudram to KGF, covering a distance of 147 kilometers. And it was the first state in the country to conceive and establish a professionally managed corporation to plan, build, operate and maintain power generation projects in the state. That is the legacy that KPCL started with and built on.

For more than three decades, the Karnataka Energy Corporation has been a driver and catalyst behind key energy sector reforms in the state - measures that have spiraled the steady growth observed in industrial and economic areas.

From the year of its creation, in 1970, KPCL focused on "growth from within", meeting the needs of the growing industry and touching the life of the common man in more ways than one.

KPCL has today an installed capacity of 6498.91 MW of hydraulic, thermal, solar and wind power, with 9500 MW in the pipeline. The 1720 MW Raichur thermal power plant located in Raichur dist is accredited with ISO 14001-2004 certification for its environmental protection measures. From an industry point of view, KPCL has raised the bar in the quality of deliverables and is constantly working on cost reduction per megawatt - a commendable cost-value equation that has become a benchmark in the National Network. KPCL's commercial actions are demonstrated in the industry: well-established infrastructure and modern and progressive management concepts, and a commitment to excel, helping it meet the challenges of Karnataka's growing energy demands.

The leverage of KPCL's initiatives is its resource management strengths - through planning, financing and project engineering. KPCL also has a high rating in terms of project completion and implementation within the implementation schedule.
