The Karnataka Milk Producer Federation (KMF) is the Apex Body for the dairy cooperative movement in Karnataka. It is the second largest dairy cooperative among the country's dairy cooperatives. In South India is ranked first in terms of acquisitions as well as sales. One of the central functions of the Federation is the commercialization of Milk and Milk Products. The brand "Nandini" is the familiar name for pure and fresh milk and dairy products. KMF has 14 Milk Unions covering all the districts of the State that obtain milk from Primary Dairy Cooperatives (DCS) and distribute milk to consumers in several municipalities / cities / rural markets of Karnataka.
The Karnataka Dairy Development Cooperation (KDDC) is the first dairy development program funded by the World Bank and the International Development Agency in the country, began in Karnataka in cooperation with the dairy cooperative organization Village Level in 1974. The AMUL pattern of dairy products The cooperatives began operating in Karnataka between 1974 and 1975 with financial assistance from the World Bank / IDA, Operation Flood II and III. Anand's three-level organizational structure - village-level Cooperative Dairy Cooperatives, District-level District Milk Unions to take care of the acquisition, processing and marketing of milk and provide technical input services to improve milk production. Milk at the level of producers and Federation at the state level to coordinate the growth of the sector in the State, are working resolutely and harmoniously in the creation of a self-sustaining rural economy based on the cooperative production of dairy products. KMF is one of the few federations in the country that have turned dairy from a subsidiary occupation into an industry.
The coordination of activities between trade unions and the developing milk and dairy market is the responsibility of KMF. Marketing Milk in the respective jurisdiction is organized by the respective Milk Unions. The Federation controls the liquid milk surplus / deficit among member dairy unions. While the marketing of all dairy products is organized by KMF, both inside and outside the State, all milk and milk products are sold under a common NANDINI brand.
The Federation strives to create a self-sufficient and dynamic rural economy in Karnataka, providing an enabling and enabling environment for the growth of dairy cooperatives as autonomous economic and social institutions. The Federation has been very successful in achieving the dairy objectives during the last four decades of dairy development in the state of Karnataka. It is generally successful in providing a viable subsidiary occupation of the unemployed rural poor in order to increase their ability to generate income and provide adequate quantity of quality milk at reasonable prices to urban consumers.
The results of an effective development of dairy products by KMF have had a wide and extensive impact on the rural landscape of Karnataka. The best remunerative price of milk purchase to farmers, efficient and timely entrance services, delivered at the doors to farmers, such as veterinary health services infallible to any remote village, quality artificial insemination to improve the breed, Market price, etc., have made farmers to increasingly patronize their cooperative. The degree of condescension of the farmers is so complete that the dominant part of the marketable surplus milk of the farmers in Karnataka is acquired by the KMF dairies and there is hardly any private acquisition of organized dairy milk which is widespread in other Parts of the country.
