Keystroke Dynamics for User Authentication

Keystroke dynamics or typing dynamics refers to the automated method of identifying or confirming an individual's identity based on the manner and pace of typing on a keyboard. The dynamics of keystrokes are biometric behavior, this means that the biometric factor is "something you do".

Already during the Second World War a technique known as The Fist of the Sender was used by military intelligence to distinguish based on the rhythm if a Morse code message was sent by an ally or enemy. These days, each home has at least one computer keyboard, making keystroke dynamics the biometric solution that is easiest to implement in terms of hardware.

With keystroke dynamics, the biometric template used to identify an individual is based on the writing pattern, pace, and writing speed on a keyboard. The raw measurements used for keystroke dynamics are the dwell time and the flight time.

• Timeout is the length of time that a key is pressed

• Flight time is the length of time between releasing a key and pressing the next key

When writing a series of characters, the time the subject needs to find the correct key (flight time) and the time that a key is held (timeout) is specific to that subject, and can be calculated in such a way that it is Independent of the general typing speed. The rate at which some strings are written can be very dependent on the person. For example, someone who wrote in English will be quicker to write certain sequences of characters like 'the' than a person with French roots.

There is software that combines the dynamics of keystrokes with other interactions that the user has with the computer, such as mouse movements (acceleration time, frequency of clicks).
