Kenyan officials will receive a salary increase from July this year, after the Cabinet approved billions of Ksh (about $ 1 billion) for the program in the 2017/18 budget.
Chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday, the Cabinet also approved funds for the harmonization of public sector salaries and allowances, pensions and housing allowances and hardship.
The government will also recruit 10,000 additional police officers and 5,000 teachers.
The Salary and Compensation Committee (SRC) this year recommended a salary increase for all public sector employees after a job evaluation exercise of some 40,000 jobs.
SRC also introduced a harmonization standard for salary ratings for all government workers, grouping public sector jobs into 19 categories.
Under the proposed qualification, the lowest paid worker in grade B1 of work will earn a minimum of 14,442 ($ 140) per month, while the highest paid employee in grade E4 of work will take home a monthly salary of Ksh292. 765 ($ 2,900).
In a statement Thursday, House spokesman Manoa Esipisu said the cabinet said the 2017/18 budget had increased by 140 million kronor (1.4 billion dollars).
"The budget has increased from Ksh2.48 trillion ($ 24 billion) in 2016/17 to Ksh2.62 trillion ($ 26 billion)," the statement read.
According to Secretary of the National Treasury, Henry Rotich, revenue collection will grow to Ksh1.704 trillion ($ 17 billion) Ksh1.5 trillion ($ 15 billion), while Ksh256 billion ($ 2.5 billion) Waiting in donor funds.
The revised compensation of officials appears when doctors and lecturers overturned their tools to protest the government's commitment to comply with collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) on wage increases.
The stagnation between doctors, doctors and government has paralyzed medical and teaching services in all public hospitals and universities, respectively.
