With the increasing prevalence of large-scale cloud computing environments, how to place the requested applications on the available computing servers in relation to energy consumption has become an essential research problem, but the placement approaches Existing applications are not effective for live applications with dynamic characters. In this article, we have proposed a new approach called EnaCloud, which allows the application of live placement dynamically with consideration of energy efficiency in a cloud platform. At EnCloud, we use a virtual machine to encapsulate the application, which supports application programming and live migration to minimize the number of machines running, in order to save energy. Especially, application placement is abstracted as a container packaging problem, and an energy-heuristic algorithm is proposed to obtain an adequate solution. In addition, an over-provisioning approach is presented to address the diverse demands of application resources. Our approach has been successfully implemented as useful components and key services in the iVIC platform. Finally, we evaluate our approach through comprehensive experiments based on the Xen virtual machine monitor and the results show that it is feasible.
