The recognition of the speaker is the identification of a person of the characteristics of the voices (biometric voice). Also called speech recognition. There is a difference between the recognition of the speaker (recognizing who is speaking) and the recognition of speech (recognizing what is being said). These two terms are often confused, and "voice recognition" can be used for both. In addition, there is a difference between the act of authentication (commonly called speaker verification or speaker authentication) and identification. Finally, there is a difference between the recognition of the speaker (who recognizes who is speaking) and the dialerization of the speaker (who recognizes when the speaker is speaking). Recognizing the speaker can simplify the task of translating speech into systems that have been trained in voices of specific people or can be used to authenticate or verify the identity of a speaker as part of a security process.

The recognition of the speaker has a history that goes back some four decades and uses the acoustic characteristics of the speech that have been found to differentiate between the individuals. These acoustic patterns reflect both anatomy (eg, size and shape of the throat and mouth) and learned behavior patterns (eg, tone of voice, style of expression). The speaker verification has gained the recognition of the speaker its classification as "biometric behavioral".

There are two main applications of speaker recognition technologies and methodologies. If the speaker claims to be of a certain identity and the voice is used to verify this statement, this is called verification or authentication. On the other hand, identification is the task of determining the identity of an unknown speaker. In one sense, speaker verification is a 1: 1 correspondence where the voice of a speaker corresponds to a template (also called a "print voice" or "voice model") while the speaker's identification is a 1 : Templates.

From a security perspective, identification is different from verification. For example, presenting your passport at border control is a verification process: the agent compares your face to the document image. In contrast, a police officer who compares an outlaw sketch against a database of previously documented criminals to find the closest match (s) is a process of identification.

Speaker verification is generally used as a "gatekeeper" to provide access to a secure system (for example, telephone banking). These systems operate with the knowledge of the users and normally require their cooperation. Speaker identification systems can also be implemented covertly without the user's knowledge to identify speakers in a discussion, alerting automated speaker change systems, verifying if a user is already enrolled in a system, and so on.

In forensic applications, it is common to first perform a speaker identification process to create a list of "best matches" and then perform a series of verification processes to determine a conclusive match.
