This is a list of earthquakes in Japan with a magnitude greater than or equal to 7.0 or that caused significant or low damage. As indicated below, the magnitude is measured on the Richter scale of magnitude (ML) or on the magnitude scale of moment (Mw), or on the scale of surface wave magnitude (Ms) for very old earthquakes. This list is not exhaustive and data of reliable and precise magnitude are scarce for earthquakes occurring before the development of modern measuring instruments.

The islands of Japan are mainly the result of several large oceanic movements occurring for hundreds of millions of years from the Middle Silurian to the Pleistocene as a result of the subduction of the Philippine Maritime Plate under the Continental Amuriana Plate and the Okinawa Plate South , And the subduction of the Pacific plate beneath the Okhotsk plate to the north.

Japan was originally united to the east coast of the Eurasian continent. The subducting plates, being deeper than the Eurasian plate, shot Japan eastward, opening the Sea of Japan 15 million years ago. The Strait of Tartary and the Strait of Korea were opened much later. Today the Japanese archipelago is considered a mature island arch and is the result of several generations of subduction plates. Approximately 15,000 km of ocean floor have been under the Japanese area in the last 450 million years, and most are fully subducted.

Japan is located in a volcanic zone in the ring of peaceful fire. Frequent earthquakes of low intensity and occasional volcanic activity are felt across the islands. Destructive earthquakes, which often result in tsunamis, occur several times a century.
