Q. Lord, you always say that we must dream big and follow our dreams. What makes you follow your own dreams? Parents, access or commitment?

A. Dreams are nothing more than goals or mission in life. In my case I had great teachers in various phases of life. And also my parents, my father and my mother were very useful teachers for me throughout their lives. I was the only family member I studied, and his commitment to me was absolute. The spiritual atmosphere at home shaped me.

You must turn your goals and mission into success in spite of the problems. That is my lifelong commitment.
Q. Lord, what is more important, the ability to handle failure or the ability to respond to failures?

A. Of course, I have had many successes and some failures. And I've also met a number of successful people around the world wherever I've gone, and when I talk to them, they reveal how many problems they've encountered, what kind of failures they've had.

Therefore, I have come to the conclusion that great success has some element of failure as well
. I still remember Professor Satish Dhawan, he gave me a project in 1973, were you born then?

Q. I was born in '73.

A. (Laughter) He gave me the SLV project in 1973, and he appointed me project director. I found that there were a lot of older people above me, you know, people experienced, they should support me and there were a number of young people with high technical knowledge. Therefore, I had to bring them together to succeed. At that time I was in my thirties, 39 or 40. So I was scared, if I can do it. It's a great job, how can I do it for the first time, how to build a rocket, to make a satellite, and is it a great vision and how can I do it?

Q. And the expectations of the nation were in you?

A. A lot of expectation. Then, Professor James Dhawan, the President saw my hesitation. He called me and gave me some tips, famous tips. He said: "Kalam, if you do not do any work, you do not have any problem". Even in the media, if you do not report there is no problem. If you report, the problem begins. (He laughs wholeheartedly about this). So,

Prof. Dhawan said major programs are always associated with major issues. But do not allow problems to become your captain, you must become the master of the problem. Defeat the problem and get
. This advice he gave me in 1973, even now is true. It is true for politicians, educators, the media, is true in all areas. So the message I am giving is that we must take control of the problems, okay?

Q. Why do we find that 2/3 of Indian engineers can not work? What do you think is the underlying problem?

A. During my recent visit to Canada, I visited a university called Waterloo. For an engineering degree students are taught in the classroom for a year, next year they go to the industry. So two out of four years pass in the industry. And in the industry they learn to work within the system, it can be the software system or the hardware system, machine system, electronic system or chemical system. But they learn to apply what they studied in college. So when they graduate there is good demand for them. They can hit the ground running.

Q. So, it is the lack of integration between real life work and academia that is the problem?

A. I want to share with you my own experience. In 1957 I studied aeronautical engineering at Madras Institute of Technology. It was a difficult discipline to get and we only had nine students. Now, Prof. Srinivasan gave us a six-month project in our senior year. The project was to design low-level combat aircraft (low altitude, clarifies). So, having studied, aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, control, etc., here we have to put them together into a feasible aircraft system design. I was the project leader for that. I was the ninth, so eight other people are there, someone would give propulsion, some other aerodynamics, etc. So, after four and a half months of study, I was there in my lab. The teacher, my guide is coming. At that time we had no computers, I was using the design board to draw the design of the plane and my friends were around me. So come and go and say, "I'm completely disappointed in your work, I'm going to stop your scholarship if you do not complete the design in two weeks." (Dr. Kalam laughs.) It was a very expensive education, if my scholarship He stopped, I had to go home. I talked all kinds of things, I gave him excuses, I told him that we had worked so hard, we all suffered, etc. But it did not help. And so, finally we all join together day and night, Saturdays, Sundays; We did not even go to our hostels. And we designed the fighter plane.

One Sunday night, Professor Srinivasan arrived, exactly one day before the deadline. He saw the design, he was very happy. He then gave us Madras coffee at his house. (Dr. Kalam laughs again as he remembers). He taught me the value of planning, of teamwork, of time. But what we learned most of this is that in the educational system, while studying mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, etc. We must also have a clear understanding of how everything fits into a larger system, a production system. So students should also be taught system design, system integration, system management, as that is what the industry wants. Our educational system must promote that.

Q. Why, sir, is entrepreneurship and skill development very important to you?

A. Add seven million people each year to 10 + 2 levels and three million graduates each year. Therefore, we inject ten million people into society each year as job seekers. This is because entrepreneurship is not taught, either in secondary education or in higher or university education. Entrepreneurship is not part of the curriculum, nor the acquisition of usable skills. That is why I am saying that if 30 percent of people have to acquire their skills, that training should start during the period of education itself.

Q. Lord, what would be three qualities you believe one requires for success in life?

A. I will say four qualities, well.

Number one, a clear goal in life, without it you will go in all directions. Secondly, you must acquire knowledge. Acquire knowledge in multiple ways. Great books should be your friend, great teachers should be a friend, and even the environment and parents can help you acquire knowledge. The third aspect is hard work with devotion. I say that since your work is toward your mission, you must be steeped in the devotion to that mission that you have in mind. And the fourth is perseverance. Persevere continuously. You do these four things and you can become anything. All these four things you have, work for it, you will achieve anything.
Q. Lord, would you say then that it finally comes down to concentrating on a mission in life?

A. No, it is finally that the goal must be in front of you. That is my experience.

We are always tempted to do many things simultaneously. But if you start doing one thing, you have a goal and put all your efforts into it, then you will definitely succeed. Of course, you have to win! A problem always appears here and there, but you have to face the problem and defeat the problem.

Q. Sir, how can we at Careers360 add a better value to our readers?

A: You should not be like any other magazine. You see 700 million people living in the rural area, you are reporting about 300 million people. So you must report the success story of a fisherman, an agri-food processor, a farmer, a craftsman. The message becomes the magazine of a population of one billion people.

Q. Sir,Lord, a final word to our readers.

A. They must think in a great way. I remember 2000 years ago, there is a famous saying in Thirukural by St. Poet Thiruvalluvar - Vellathanaythu Malar Neetam Mandartham Ullathanaytu Uyarvu. This means that just as the height of the water in a pond determines the height at which a lily would grow, it is the heights of the thoughts that determines the heights to which it could aspire. Thus, as human beings must have great thoughts, great goals, and when thoughts are transformed into actions carried out with perseverance and devotion, success must follow. Thank you very much sir.
