A sugar cane mill can refer to a factory that processes sugar cane to produce raw or white sugar. It can also mean the piece of equipment that grinds the sugar cane sticks to extract the juice.

Processing / Treatment

There are a number of steps in the production of raw cane sugar:

1. Reception and unloading of cane (receiving the cane in the factory and unloading it from the transportation vehicles)

2. Preparation of the cane (cut and crush the cane to prepare it for the extraction of the juice)

3. Extraction of juice (two technologies are in common use: milling or diffusion)

4. Clarification of the juice (remove suspended solids from the juice, typically mud, waxes, fibers)

5. The evaporation of the juice (to concentrate the juice to a thick syrup of approximately 65 ° brix)

6. Clarification of syrup (remove suspended solids from syrup, typically colloid syze from earthenware, waxes, fibers, etc.)

7. Crystallization

8. Centrifugation (Separation of sugar crystals from mother liquor, made by centrifugal machines)

9. Sugar drying

10. Packaging and delivery

These processing steps will produce brown or raw sugar. White sugar from the plant also known as plantation white sugar can be produced by introducing some sort of color removal process (often sulphitation) between the clarification of the juice and the above-mentioned juice evaporation stages. The raw sugar produced is often refined to produce white sugar. This refined sugar can be made in a completely separate factory or in a background refinery that is attached to the raw sugar factory.
