The ATM is an automatic banking machine (ABM) that allows the customer to complete basic transactions without the help of bank representatives. There are two types of ATMs. The basic allows the client to only withdraw cash and receive a report of the balance of the account. Another is a more complex machine that accepts the deposit, provides payment services with a credit card and informs about the account. It is an electronic device that only bank customers use to process account transactions. Users access their account through a special type of plastic card that is encoded with user information on a magnetic stripe. The strip contains an identification code that is transmitted to the bank's central computer by modem. Users insert the card at ATMs to access the account and process their account transactions. The ATM was invented by John Shepherd-Barron in the year 1960.

Working

There are mainly two types of ATMs that differ according to the way they operate. They can be called as;
1. ATM with leased line
2. Automatic dialing ATMs

Any ATM machine needs a data terminal with two inputs and four output devices. For this to happen there must also be availability of a host processor. The host processor is necessary so that the ATM can connect and also communicate with the person requesting the cash. The Internet Service Provider (ISP) also plays an important role in this action. They act as a gateway to intermediate networks and also to the bank's computer.

A leased line ATM has a dedicated 4-wire point-to-point telephone line that helps connect it to the host processor. This type of machines are preferred in places where the volume of the user is high. They are considered high-end and the operating costs of this type of machine are very high.

The dial-up ATMs only have a normal telephone line with a modem and a toll-free number. Since these are normal connections, their initial installation cost is much lower and their operating costs only become a fraction of those of a rented ATM.
The host is mainly owned by the bank. It can also be owned by an ISP. If the host is owned by the bank, only the machines that work for that particular bank will be accepted.
