An intelligent switch is a high-level storage area network (SAN) routing switch that provides features such as storage virtualization, quality of service (QoS), remote mirroring, data sharing, protocol conversion, and advanced security. Smart switches are an important part of storage area management (SAM), a methodology that is gaining importance as networks become increasingly complex and costly to deploy, operate and maintain.

Smart switches can enable storage management in heterogeneous environments, reduce SAM costs, and provide scalability and extensibility to existing SANs in large and growing enterprises. However, smart switches are still in the evolutionary stage and may not be an ideal solution for smaller enterprises or in SANs that are not expected to grow or change substantially in the immediate future.

Smart switches from some high-end SANs are the latest product of a decades-old technology. Primitive smart switches first appeared on telephone networks during the 1980s, and were used for automatic routing of calls. Similar switches found applications in other communications networks, including the Internet in its evolution during the 1990s.

Network switches are no longer simply devices for connecting multiple users and resources. Today, local area network (LAN) switches form the core of an organization's technological infrastructure. They also provide the foundation for advanced services including integrated security, converged services (voice, data and video), optimized application delivery, virtualization and operational management capability.

The network is now the platform to deliver an increasingly complex number of business enablement applications and services. In order to enable growth within an organization and for the organization to remain competitive, the network must be easily scalable and adaptable to facilitate the rapid deployment of new technologies.

At the same time, the choice of network switches should ensure that the operational requirements of providing high-speed connectivity, high availability and efficient and predictable traffic patterns are not compromised as the network varies in size and complexity.

Intelligent switching solutions ensure that, through the use of the best switching hardware and best design practices, investment protection is guaranteed as the network adapts to current and future demands aligned with the Organizational growth.
