WEARABLE COMPUTERS

Centrino Mobile Technology is clearly something to be excited about as it brings about extended battery life, better performance and wireless connectivity to the consumers. Consumers can now enjoy wireless computing anytime and anywhere with Centrino mobile technology that improves productivity and greatly enhance mobility. The demand for wireless connectivity is accelerated by the fast growing number of hotspots around the world especially in US and Asia region like Japan, Korea and Singapore.
Overall, we find that Centrino based notebook is great for business applications that requires both performance and battery life power. The power saving functions of the Pentium M processor, the 855 Chipset together with the Enhanced SpeedStep Technology works very well together indeed in prolonging battery life. Although Centrino based notebooks still can't match Pentium 4-M based notebooks in gaming, content creation, video encoding and rendering performance but consumers will have a choice now either go for decently Good performance/Better battery life with the Centrino or stick on to High performance/Decent Battery life with the Pentium 4-M. I am sure most will stick with Centrino as battery life is really a key factor in mobile computing not just performance alone.
The gaming performance is evident help alot by the NVIDIA GeForce 4 440 Go and nice scores are generated out of the DX8 3DMark2001 and OpenGL Quake III Arena therefore gamers should seriously consider Centrino based notebooks with NVIDIA GeForce4 Go or ATi Mobility GPUs for enhance gaming performance. The Rendering performance is reasonable for Centrino as it is much dependent on the Pentium M processor on raw CPU performance. Video Encoding too relies very much on the CPU and thus it really drain battery life fast. The battery life performance of Centrino based notebooks is much dependent on the battery size and quality and a sleek and slim looking Samsung X10 is built with looks and portability in mind therefore battery life will be much affected. Consumers are free to choose Centrino based notebooks based on different form factors to suit their needs for better battery life and features or better portability/weaker battery like the Samsung X10.
The wireless performance still have some way to go since bandwidth for 802.11b is quite limited and the actual transfer rate is around 3MB/s which is still quite slow when transfer large files between computers over the WLAN. Intel should be looking forward to include 802.11g in the near future when it becomes an industry standard. However, 802.11b is great for computing on the move and especially useful for consumers who requires constant connectivity to the internet.
Yes we certainly like Centrino mobile technology but we believe there should be more should be more enhancements coming up for the 1.8Ghz Dothan based on the 90nm micron process in second half of this year. I would expect more and better architectural features built into Dothan, a higher FSB to 533Mhz and perhaps a larger L2 cache too (1.5MB to 2MB) and one feature is certainly worth considering will be the Intel's Hyper-Threading Technology for enhancing multi-tasking for the notebook users. Also i feel that Intel actively embracing 802.11b standard is a little late in the market as this technology is fast succeeded by better WLAN standard such as 802.11g, a hybrid of 802.11a and 802.11b with better bandwidth and coverage.

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 12, 2003
Intel Corporation today introduced Intel® Centrino™ mobile technology, integrating wireless capability into a new generation of mobile PCs that will bring business users and consumers greater freedom to connect in new places and in new ways.
Representing Intel's best technology for mobile PCs, Intel Centrino mobile technology includes a new mobile processor, related chipsets and 802.11 wireless network functions that have been optimized, tested and validated to work together. In addition to wireless communications, Intel Centrino mobile technology includes features designed to enable extended battery life, thinner and lighter notebook designs, and outstanding mobile performance.
"Unwiring the PC will change the way people use computers, allowing them to communicate, be productive or be entertained wherever and whenever they want," said Craig Barrett, Intel's chief executive officer. "Our focus on integrating all the elements of mobility allows Intel Centrino mobile technology to deliver an outstanding wireless computing experience and marks the first time we've put a combination of technologies under a single brand. This breakthrough innovation, together with industry-wide investment and Wi-Fi hotspot deployments, brings new computing and communications capabilities to businesses and consumers, adding value to mobile PCs."
Intel Centrino mobile technology-based notebook PCs are available immediately from leading computer makers worldwide. System pricing will start as low as $1,399, comparable to today's mainstream notebooks. Computer shoppers can identify these notebooks by a Centrino brand logo featuring a striking magenta color and the Intel Inside® mark.

The technology represented by the Intel Centrino mobile technology brand combines the Intel® Pentium® M processor, the Intel® 855 Chipset Family and the Intel® PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Connection. All components were optimized, validated and tested to work together with mobility in mind.
The processor is based on a new mobile-optimized microarchitecture that delivers higher performance and lower power consumption to enable longer battery life in today's mainstream systems. Key features include: Micro-Ops Fusion, which combines two micro-operations into one, enabling it to execute faster and at lower power; Advanced Branch Prediction -- a new implementation technique -- to help to reduce overall latency in the system contributing to higher performance at lower power; and the Dedicated Stack Manager, which reduces the overall number of micro-operations required to generate higher performance at lower power.
