The power analysis attacks on cryptographic systems on the has become a field that is increasingly being researched. The countermeasures for these attacks are also being researched very much. Various experiments are being conducted on the the potential effectiveness of power analysis attacks. Both the hardware processing elements such as the ASIC, FPGA and the software parts such as the smartcard, DSP etc are being experimented with. The power analysis on the FPGA has been mostly theoretical in nature and have been evaluated only through simulation. Most of the work done has been done on the custom hardware that hardly mirrors the real world hardware. In this article, Differential Power Analysis has been done on the FPGA and the results have been concluded. an automated data acquisition and analysis design for the Data Encryption Standard implemented on an FPGA board has been shown. cracking cryptographic systems using the power analysis attack is a very powerful approach. The processing elements were mostly built using CMOS and the analysis of the power emitted by the circuit gave away valuable information.
