Windows XP Embedded, often denoted by XPe, is a componentized version of the Professional edition of Windows XP. One is free to choose from the 12,000 different components that are available based on one’s application needs.
A basic XPe image can be as small as 8 MB in size with a bootable kernel and can expand to include many other features of the full version of Windows XP.
