Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL) was established by the government of Tamil Nadu to produce newspapers and bagasse paper, a residue of sugarcane. The Government of Tamil Nadu listed the paper mill in April 1979 as one of the most environmentally-friendly paper mills in the world according to the provisions of the Companies Act of 1956. The factory is located at Kagithapuram WikiMiniAtlas11.0488 ° N 77.9977 ° E in the Karur District of Tamil Nadu. The registered office of the company is located in Guindy, Chennai.
The Company began production in 1984 with an initial capacity of 90,000 tons per year. TNPL started the commercial production of newsprint in its new No. 2 paper machine since January 1996. The machine was jointly supplied by Voith Sulzer Paper Technology and its licensee in India, Larsen and Toubro Limited, and has opened new perspectives for the making newspaper. The machine is designed to work with 100% bagasse. Over the years, production capacity has increased to 2.45,000 tons per year and the Company has become the largest bagasse-based paper mill in the world that consumes around one million tons of bagasse. every year. The Company is in the process of implementing the Plant Expansion Plan to increase capacity to 4,000,000 tons per year as of July 2010.
