Indian Railways
The first railway in the Indian subcontinent ran over a 21 mile stretch from Bombay to Thane. The idea of a railway to connect Bombay with Thane, Kalyan and the Thal and Bhore Ghats first inclined Mr. George Clark, Chief Engineer of the Government of Bombay, during a visit to Bhandup in 1843.
The formal opening ceremony was held on April 16, 1853, when 14 railroad cars carrying about 400 guests left Bori Bunder at 3.30 pm "amid the loud applause of a large crowd and the greeting of 21 guns" . The first passenger train left Howrah Station, stationed at Hooghly, at a distance of 24 miles, on 15 August 1854. Thus, the first section of the East India Railroad was opened to public traffic, inaugurating transport Railway on the eastern side of the subcontinent.
In the south the first line was opened 1 of July of 1856 by the railway company of Madras. It runs between Vyasarpadi Jeeva Nilayam (Veyasarpandy) and Walajah Road (Arcot), a distance of 63 miles. In the north a length of 119 miles of line was laid from Allahabad to Kanpur on March 3, 1859. The first section of the road from Hathras to Matheling Canton was opened to traffic on October 19, 1875.
These were the beginnings of the small, which develops in due time on a network of rail lines throughout the country. By 1880 the Indian Railroad system had a route mileage of about 9,000 miles. INDIAN RAILWAYS, the country's leading transport organization is Asia's largest rail network and the second largest in the world under one direction.
