The effect of particle size on the reactivity of the hexyltrimethoxysilane (C6S) with the surface of the particles was studied using silica nanoparticles (SNPs) with different diameters (30 or 200 nm). In the case of 30 nm SNPs, a large amount of isolated silanol was observed. On the other hand, in the case of 200 nm SNPs, the amount of silanol bound to hydrogen and hydrogen bonded water molecules on the surface of the SNPs increased. Because hydrogen-bound silanol and hydrogen-bound water improved the reaction of C6S with SNPs, the Cs-S-quisorbide in SNPs of 200 nm was greater than that of SNPs of 30 nm. In addition, the effects of surface modification on the stability of the dispersion in MEK were studied using viscosity measurements and surface strength measurements by the AFM colloidal probe method. The viscosity of the diluted suspension of SNPs / MEK was not changed by the chemosorptions of C6S; However, the viscosity of the dense suspension is effectively reduced by surface modification. The viscosity of the slurry was estimated to be effectively reduced when the mean particle surface distance in the slurry was close to the distance at which the repulsive force appeared by the surface force measurements using the AFM colloidal probe.

Surface modification is the act of modifying the surface of a material by placing physical, chemical or biological characteristics different from those originally found on the surface of a material.

This modification is generally done to solid materials, but it is possible to find examples of modification to the surface of specific liquids.
