SIGNALLING AND TELECOMMUNICATION WORK IN INDIAN RAILWAYS

Signaling is one of the most important aspects of Railway communication. No formal systems existed earlier for the purpose of signalling. The drivers mainly depended on the line of sight information only. But the need for an efficient signalling system was necessitated by the growing number of accidents and mishaps. The most earliest techniques involve leaving a gap of 10 mins in between the successive trains. But rear-end collisions were resulted because of the frequent break downs of the trains in those days. As a result, the fixed signaling system was brought forth.In this system ,the track was divided into fixed sections and each section was protected by a fixed signaling. This system is being continued even now aven though there have been changes in the basic signalling methods. Presently, block signaling through the use of electric instruments is used whereas mechanical signals were used earlier.

SOLID STATE INTERLOCKING
It is a data-driven signal control system designed for the use in the british railway system. SSI replaced the mechanical interlocking. This has been constructed with the reliable relay technology and hence has the advantages of modularity, improved flexibility and greater economy.
