Kerala Minerals and Metals Ltd is an integrated public sector company manufacturing titanium dioxide in Kollam, Kerala, India. Its operations include mining, separation of minerals, synthetic rutile and pigment production plants. In addition to producing rutile-grade titanium dioxide pigments for various types of industries, it also produces other products such as ilmenite, rutile, zirconium, sillimanite, synthetic rutile, etc. It is one of the Best Performing Public Sector Units in India.

The company manufactures titanium dioxide through the chloride route. The different grades are produced by KMML under the KEMOX brand. KMML has always responded to social and environmental causes. Some of the initiatives taken by KMML have made a significant change in the area and its people.

The history of Sankarmangalam beaches and nearby areas is linked to the history of KMML. In 1909 the German scientist Dr. Schomberg found traces of monazite in the sand flakes in the coir imported from Sankaramangalam. Rare earth minerals made the beach an area of scientific interest. The discovery process of this huge Indian deposit was accidentally initiated in 1908 when Herr Schomberg, a German chemist, identified the presence of monazite in the sand scraps of coconut contaminants imported from Kerala. Encouraged by the high demand for thorium oxide in the gas mantle in those days, Schomberg established the first plant in Manavalakurichi (MK) in 1910 for the separation of the monazite and later another plant in Chavara. After Schomberg's arrest on charges of being a German spy during World War I, both plants in Manavalakurichi and Chavara were closed.

The London Cosmopolitan Mineral Company, established in 1914 in London, took over these plants and continued its operations. In 1920, Hopkins and Williams (H & W), another English company based in London began operation in MK and Chavara. The first Indian exportation of Chavara took place in 1922 and the Indian ilmenite maintained a virtual monopoly in the world market as a basic raw material for the titania (white) pigment until 1940 when four plants belonging to Travancore Minerals Ltd (TMC) , Hopkins & William Travancore Ltd (H & W) and Fx Pereira & Sons (FXP) together exported up to three hundred thousand tons of Chavara ilmenite.

In 1932, a private entrepreneur established the F. X. Perira and Sons (Travancore) Pvt. Ltd, the forerunner of KMML. Subsequently, the ownership of the company changed hands three times, after which in 1956 it was taken by the state government and placed under the control of the department of industries. The unit was later converted into a joint-stock company in 1972 under the name 'The Kerala Minerals and Metals Ltd.' With the objectives of better utilization of the mineral wealth found along the maritime coast of the districts of Kollam and Alappuzha, generation of growth and employment in the state in general and in the local area in particular.

The construction of the titanium dioxide pigment using chloride technology began in 1979 and was commissioned in 1984 as the first and only integrated titanium dioxide plant in the world.
