"Ergonomics is the scientific discipline related to understanding interactions between humans and other elements of a system and profession that applies theory, principles, data and methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall performance of the system".
The terms "ergonomics" and "human factors" can be used interchangeably, although "ergonomics" is often used in relation to the physical aspects of the environment, such as workstations and control panels, whereas "human factors" In relation to the broader in which people work. In this site we generally use the term that best fits the research or industry we are discussing.

Ergonomics is a science-based discipline that brings together knowledge of other subjects such as anatomy and physiology, psychology, engineering and statistics to ensure that designs complement people's strengths and abilities and minimize the effects of their Limitations. Instead of waiting for people to adapt to a design that forces them to work in an uncomfortable, stressful or dangerous way, ergonomists and human factors specialists seek to understand how a product, workplace or system can be designed to fit The people who need to use it.

To achieve this goal, we need to understand and design the variability represented in the population, which encompasses attributes such as age, size, strength, cognitive ability, previous experience, cultural expectations and goals. Qualified ergonomics are the only recognized professionals who have the competence to optimize performance, safety and comfort. The CIEHF is the only body in the United Kingdom that manages and represents this competition.

Usually they do not notice a good design, unless it is exceptionally good, because it gives us no cause. But you notice the poor design. If you ever got lost at an airport with poor signage, looked helplessly at a machine with incomprehensible instructions, cut your hands in poor packaging or sighed as you had to move things to get to something you need, you know the lack of Ergonomic design can be incredibly frustrating. But it's not just the little everyday things in which ergonomics plays a role.

In the field of transport and aviation in particular, the adoption of a human factors approach has modified the design of air traffic control systems, flight doors and aircraft interiors. Human factors specialists are integrated into the teams providing our national air traffic services. They support the development of technology that allows us to manage one of the busiest areas of the world's airspace, maintaining a record safety record. New sensor and communications technologies have led to advanced glass cockpits in military and civil aircraft; Ergonomics and human factors ensure that these advances are implemented in such a way that the human pilot remains 'in the loop' while controlling the aircraft, as well as taking advantage of the precise detection and visualization tools provided by engineering innovations. And, as passengers, they now help us safely evacuate aircraft through interior light designs and safety information, informed by ergonomic research.

For many years, high-risk industries have recognized the importance of minimizing the risk of human error. The nuclear sector has led the way in understanding, measuring and improving human reliability, and has an enviable reputation, having avoided major accidents that have damaged other sectors of the industry such as the Buncefield oil tanker explosion. Nuclear regulation of the UK is seen by many as the gold standard.

In health care, ergonomists and human factors professionals are working collaboratively with clinicians, managers and IT specialists to ensure a safe and resilient health system of the 21st century. It has focused heavily on improving communications among physicians, ensuring that teams of doctors and nurses work together to make effective decisions and reduce the likelihood of harm. In addition to this important work, many teams found in a clinical environment, from ambulances to drips that deliver life-saving drugs, have been developed and evaluated by human factors experts.
