Indian Railways (IR information mark) is a state railway company, responsible for rail transportation in India. It is owned and operated by the Government of India through the Ministry of Railways. It is the fourth railway network in the world with 119,630 km (74,330 mi) of total track and 92,081 km of racetrack for a route of 66,687 km with 7,216 stations by the end of 2015-16. In 2015-16, IR transported 8,107 million passengers per year or more than 22 million passengers per day and 1,101 million tons of cargo annually. 


The railroads were first introduced to India in 1830s for frieght purposes. The first passenger train ran from Bombay to Thane in 1853. In 1951 the systems were nationalized as a unit, the Indian Railways, becoming one of the largest networks in the world. IR operates long-distance and suburban rail systems predominantly in a gauge network. Small stretches of your network use narrow gauges and meters. It also has locomotive and coach production facilities in several locations in India, with assigned codes that identify its caliber, type of power and type of operation.

Indian Railways is the eighth largest employer in the world and had 1,331 million employees by the end of 2015-16. [3] In 2015-2016, Indian railroads had revenues of $ 1.683 trillion ($ 26 billion), comprising $ 1.09 trillion ($ 17 billion) in freight revenues and $ 442.83 billion ($ 6.9 billion Of dollars) had an operating ratio of 90.5% in 2015-16. [2] By the end of 2015-16, IR rolling stock comprises more than 251,256 freight cars, 70,241 passenger cars and 11,122 locomotives (39 steam, 5,869 diesel and 5214 electric locomotives).

Indian Railways operate on average 13,313 passenger trains daily in 2015-16. Postal or express trains, of the most common type, run at an average speed of 50.9 km / h.  Trains have a 5-digit numbering system. By the end of 2015-16, of the total route length of 68,525 km (42,579 miles), 28,327 km (45%) were electrified and 28,371 km (37%) were double-line or multiple route.
