ELECTION COMMISSION (Article-324)
*The study and scientific analysis of elections is called Psephology.
*Electoral system in India is known as Simple Majority System.
*Article 324 of Indian Constitution deals with the Election Commission which is responsible for conducting elections to the Parliament, State Assemblies and to the offices of the President and the Vice President of India. Thus Election Commission is a Constitutional Body.
*Election Commission came into force on 25th January 1950.
*National Voters day - January 25
*Head Quarters of Election Commission is Nirvachan Sadan, located at New Delh.
*Election Commission consists of a Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners.
*Election Commissioners are appointed by the President.
*The tenure of Election Commissioners is 6 years or until they attain 65 years of age, whichever is earlier.
*General Elections to the first Lok Sabha were held in India between 25th October 1951 and 21st February 1952.
*The first voting were cast in the Chini Taluk in Himachal Pradesh on 25th October 1951.
*There were 489 seats for the first Lok Sabha elections and out of this congress won 364 seats.
*Telugu Desam party is the only one Regional party which became the main opposition party in the Lok Sabha. TDP won 30 seats in the Lok Sabha in 1984.
*Chief Election Commissioner may be removed from his office only by the process of impeachment.
