RAJVA SABHA (Article
*Rajya Sabha is constituted under Article 80 of the constitution.
*Rajya Sabha is known as the House of Elders’.
*The Hindi name of Rajya Sabha was adopted by the council of states on 23rd August 1954.
*Rajya Sabha is a permanent body not subjected to dissolution.
*One-third of members of Rajya Sabha retire every two years.
*The maximum strength of the Rajya Sabha is fixed at 250 (238 elected and 12 nominated).
*At present there are 245 members in the Rajya sabha. Out of which 233 are elected by the elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of States and Union Territories.

*Rajya Sabha represents the federal character of the constitution. However the States do not get equal representation in the Rajya Sabha.
*Representation of states in the Rajya Sabha varies in accordance with the population of the states.
*UP has the largest representation in the Rajya Sabha (31 members).
*Kerala has 9 seats in the Rajya Sabha.
*The fourth schedule to the Constitution deals with the allocation of seats in the Rajya Sabha to the states and union territories.
