Regulating Act (1773)
*Regulating Act was the first step taken by the British Government to control the affairs of the British East India Company in India.
*It laid the foundation of Central administration in India.
*Governor of Bengal became the Governor General of Bengal by the Regulating Act of 1773.
*Sir Elija Impey was the first Chief Justice of Calcutta Supreme Court.
*The first Governor General of Bengal - Warren Hastings
*It created an executive council of four members to assist the Governor General.
*It provided the establishment of a Supreme Court at Calcutta.
*Calcutta Supreme Court came into being in 1774 comprising one Chief Justice and three other judges.
Pitts India Act (1784)
*Pitts India Act was passed to rectify the defects of the Regulating Act.
*The company’s territories in India were fort the first time called the British possessions in India.
*The British Government was given the Supreme control over company’s affairs and its administration in India.
Charter Act 1833
*Charter Act of 1833 was the final step towards centralisation in British India.
*General of Bengal became the Governor
*General of India by the Charter Act of 1833.
*The first Governor General of British India was William Bentic
*The Governor-General of India was given executive and legislative powers for the entire British India.
