*Government of India decided to observe October 31st as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) every year since 2014 as a mark of tribute to the efforts made by the first Home minister of India.
*Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was bom on 31st October 1875 at N.adiad in Gujarat
*He was the main leader of Kheda agitation of Peasants (1918) against excessive tax collection.
*The success of Bardoli Satyagraha (1928) under the leadership of Patel gave him the status of one of the main leaders of independence movement.
*He is also remembered as the Patron Saint of India’s Civil Servants
*He was the president of the Karachi session of INC (1931)
*A resolution relating to Fundamental Rights was passed at this Karachi session
*He was the chairman of the committee on Fundamental Rights and Minorities in the Constituent Assembly.
*He was the minister for Home and Information & Broadcasting in the Interim Government formed on 2nd September 1946.
*He is the first Deputy Prime Minister and the first Home Minister of Independent India.
*He successfully handled the rulers of Princely States and achieved the
*‘Operation Polo’ (1948) which annexed Hyderabad to Indian Union, was held under his direction.
*Patel is popularly known as ‘Iron Man of India’ and ‘Indian Bismark’
*The title ‘Sardar’ was given to Patel by Gandhiji.
*Patel died on 15th December 1950. J
