STATE LEGISLATURE
*There is no uniformity in the organisation of state legislatures. 22 states have unicameral system.
*Only 7 states have bicameral legislature ie legislative assembly and legislative council.

STATE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY
*The State Legislative Assembly consists of representatives directly elected by the people. 
*The maximum strength of the Legislative Assembly in the states is fixed at 500. and minimum is 60
 however some states have exception.
*The Governor can nominate one member from the Anglo-Indian community to the Legislative Assembly.
*The normal tenure of the Assembly is five years. However the Governor, is authorised to dissolve the assembly any time.
*The term of the assembly can be extended during the period of national emergency by a law of Parliament for one year at a time (for any length of time)
*However this extension cannot be continued beyond a period of six months after the emergency has ceased to operate.
*The tenure of a member of the Legislative Assembly is 5 years.
*To become a member of the legislative Assembly, he must be a citizen of India and he must have attained the age of 25 years. 
*Any question of disqualification of a member of state legislature is decided by the Governor of the State.
*The question of disqualification of members on ground of defection under the Tenth Schedule is decided by the speaker in the case of legislative assembly and the chairman, in the case of legislative council.
*Each House of the state legislature has its own presiding officer.
*There is a Speaker and Deputy Speaker for the legislative assembly and Chairman and a Deputy Chairman for the legislative council.
*The state which has the largest number of MLA’s 
Ans : UP (403) 
*The state which has the least number of MLA’s 
Ans : Sikkim (32)

Council of Ministers
*The total number of ministers, including the chief minister in a state shall not exceed 15 per cent of the total strength of the legislative assembly of that state. But it shall not be less than 12. This provision was added by the 91st Constitutional Amendment Act of 2003.
*The ministers shall hold office during the pleasure of the Governor.
*The council of ministers shall be collectively responsible to the State Legislative Assembly.
*A person who is not a member of either House of the state legislature can also be appointed as a minister but for a maximum period of six months within which he must become a member of either House of the State legislature (either elected or nominated).
*The functions of the Speaker of the Assembly is analogous to that of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

*The functions of the Chairman of the Legislative Council is analogous to that of the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
*The Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly are elected by the assembly from among the members of the Assembly.
*The Chairman and the Deputy Chairman of the legislative council are elected by the legislative council from among its members. Money Bills can be introduced only in the Assembly and not in the council.
