74th Amendment Act of 1992
*The 74th constitutional Amendment Act of 1992 came into force on 1st June 1993
*This Act has added a new part IX -A to the Constitution which Covers Articles 243 P to 243 Z G.
*The Act also added a new twelfth schedule to the constitution.,
*The Act gave constitutional status to the Municipalities. Hence the Act is known as Municipalities Act.
*The Act Provides for three types of municipalities.
1)Nagar Panchayat for an area in transition from a rural area to an urban area.
2)A Municipal council for a smaller urban area
3)A Municipal corporation for a larger urban area.
*The first Municipal corporation in India was set up at Madras in 1688.
*Municipal corporations were set up at Bombay and Calcutta in 1726.In 1882, Lord Ripon issued a resolution that has been hailed as the Magna Carta of local self Government in India.
*Lord Ripon is called the father of local self Government in India.
*The municipal commissioners of the municipalities are appointed by the State government.
*First Municipality in India to get ISO Certificate for quality management Malappuram
