Three Lists
Seventh Schedule to the constitution provides three lists for the distribution of legislative subjects between the Centre and the States.
List I = Union List
List 11= State List
List III m Concurrent List
*The parliament has exclusive power to make laws with respect to any of the subjects enumerated in the Union List.
At present the Union List has 100 subjects (originally 97)
*The State Legislatures have, in normal circumstances, exclusive power to make laws with respect to any of the subjects enumerated in the state list.
*At present the State List has 61 subjects (originally 66).
*Both the Parliament and state legislatures can make laws with respect to any of the subjects enumerated in the Concurrent List.At present the Concurrent List has 52 subjects (originally 47).
*Parliament has the exclusive power to levy taxes on subjects enumerated in the Union List which are 15 in number.
*'The state legislatures have exclusive power to levy taxes on subjects enumerated in the State List, which are 20 in number.
*Both the Parliament and the State legislatures can levy taxes on subjects enumerated in the concurrent list which are 3 in number.
*The power to impose taxes enumerated in any of the three lis vested in the parliament.
