KERALA WOMEN’S COMMISSION
*The Kerala Women’s Commission Act was passed on 15th September 1995.
*The Kerala Women’s Commission Bill was drafted under the guidance of the then Minister K.R. Gouri Amma with legal aid from Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer and Justice Subrammanian Potty.
*Smt.K.C.Rosakkutty is Chairperson of Kerala Women's Commission
*The first Kerala Women’s Commission came into force on 14th March 1996.
*The Chairperson and members of the KWC shall hold office for a period of five years.
*Smt. Sugatha Kumari was the first Chairperson of Kerala Women’s Commission.
Dowry Prohibition Act
*Dowry Prohibition Act,was passed by the parliament in 1961
*The Dowry Prohibition Act prohibits transfer of any property or valuable security by one party to a marriage to the other party or parents of either party to a marriage.
*The unnatural death of a woman will deemed to be dowry death if the wife dies in the husband’s house within 7 years after marriage.
*Penalty for taking dowry as per the Dowry Prohibition Act - imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than five years, and with the fine which shall not be less than fifteen thousand rupees or the amount of the value of such dowry, whichever is more
*Penalty for demanding dowry - imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than six months but which may extend to two years and with fine which may extend to ten thousand rupees
*The maximum punishment for Dowry Death is Life Imprisonment.
*The minimum punishment for Dowry Death is 7 years imprisonment.
*Dowry Death is an offence punishable under section 304 B of Indian Penal Code.
*Every offence under Dowry Prohibition Act shall be Non bailable and non compoundable
Domestic Violence Act
*Domestic Violence Act was passed in the year 2005 and it came into force on 26th October 2006.
*Protection of Woman from Domestic Violence Act 2005 defines the domestic Violence as - Any harm injury to health, safety, life, limb or well being or any other act of threatening or coercion etc. by any adult member of the family.
*Domestic Violence includes - Physical and sexual abuse verbal and emotional abuse and economic abuse.
*As per the Domestic Violence Act a child is a person below the age of - 18 years
*As per the Domestic Violence Act, for every district the State shall appoint - Protection Officers [ under Section 8 (1)]
*The Domestic Violence Act is to protect women from the harassment of all members of the family.
*The primary beneficiaries of Domestic Violence Act are Women and Children.
*The Act envisages entrusting the duty of protection to NGOs as - Service providers
*According to the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005, appeal can be made to the sessions court within 30 days.
NCPCR (National Commission for Protection of Child Rights)
*National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) was set up in March 2007.
*Under the Commission for Protection of Child Rights Act 2005.
*Prof. Shantha Sinha is the first chairperson of NCPCR.
*Present Chairperson of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights
