Certain legislations for the protection of women
*Hindu Marriages Act (HMA) 1956 - bridegroom and bride should have completed 21 and 18 years of age at the time of marriage.
*Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 
*Pre-conception & Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994, Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971, (to fight sex selection) 
*Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act was passed by the Parliament in 1986. The commission of Sati (Prevention) Act was passed by the Parliament in 1987.
*The offence of custodial Rape is introduced in the Indian Penal Code in 1983 after the protest on Mathura case.
*The Self Employed Women’s Association of India(SEWA) was founded in 1971 by Dr. Ela Bhatt
*Director of the controversial documentary ‘India’s Daughter’, about 2012 Delhi gang rape victim Nirbhaya
*Supreme court of India ruled that Divorced Muslim woman was eligible for maintenance in the case of Shabanu case.
*The Supreme Court issued guidelines on sexual harrassment of women in work place in the Vishaka case.
*Under the Equal Remuneration Act 1976, It was provided that women doing similar work
*The book ‘A Vindication of the Rights of Woman’ was written by - Mary Wollstone Craft
*The book ‘A Vindication of the Rights of Men’was written by- Mary Wollstone Craft to men would qualify for equal pay. It is a Directive Principle Under Article 39 (d) of the Indian Constitution.
*Mary Roy’s case led to the granting of equal inheritance rights for Syrian Christian Women in Kerala.

NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR WOMEN 

*As per the recommendations of the committee on the status of the women in India, National Commission for Women Act was passed by the Parliament in 1990.
*The first National Commission for Women (NCW) was constituted on 31st January 1992.
*Head Quarters of National Commission for women -Nirbhaya Bhavarn (New Delhi).
*The NCW shall consist of a chairperson and other five members to be nominated by the central Govt. 
*At least one Member each, shall be from amongst persons belonging to the scheduled castes and scheduled Tribes respectively.
*Lalitha Kumaramangalam Chairperson of National Commission for Women.
*The Chairperson and the Members shall hold office for a period of three years or till the age of sixty five years, which ever is earlier.
*Resignation of the Chairperson and members of the National Commission for Women is addressed to the Central Govt.
*National Commission for Women shall be consulted by the Central Government in policy matters affecting women.
*Jayanthi Patnaik is the first Chairperson of NCW
