Improving TCP/IP Performance over Third-Generation Wireless Networks
The (3G) wireless networks with high data rates is gradually being deployed. The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) must be optimised to perform in these networks. This will have a broad and significant impact on data application performance. The parts described in this chapter are :
-adapting to the significant delay and rate variations over the wireless channel and
-a wireless channel and TCP-aware scheduling and buffer sharing algorithm
Window Regulator algorithms is presented to use the receiver window field in the acknowledgment (ACK) packets. The the latency of
short flows is reduced by the use of the new buffer sharing algorithm.

ARCHITECTURE
the 3G wireless access network architecture consists of PDSN, RNC and many BSs which are connected to the 3G enabled devices wirelessly. The base stations are managed by an RNC. The handoffs and
termination of the Radio-Link Protocol (RLP) is done by the RNC. The Packet Data Service Node (PDSN) terminates the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP).

WINDOW REGULATOR
The delay and bandwidth variations can cause the variation in the throughput. One of the methods to avoid buffer overflow at the congestion (RNC) buffer is to control the amount of data packet that can arrive at the RNC data buffer.

Introduction
TCP is most widely used
Windows regulator that Maximizes
throughput for all buffer sizes
Scheduling algorithm to reduce transfer
latency for short flow
Exploiting user diversity is important

Simplified 3G network
The simplified block diagram consists of a
-BS:base stations
-RNC: Radio network controller
-PDSN/SGSN: Packet data service node, Serving GPRS service node
-HA: home agent

TCP WINDOWING
Windows regulator that Maximizes
throughput for all buffer sizes
-Windows RegulatorWindows Regulator--static (WRS)
-Windows Regulator Dynamic(WRD)

Comparison Summary

DT and WRS cannot adapt to the large rate and delay variation in wireless channel
A R adapts well to the large variations but does not perform well with latency as estimation errors cause throughput degrade
WRD performs well against latency but poorly against congestion loss
WRB is best and robust against latency and packet loss
