Identification of Yellow mosaic Virus Resistant Varieties in Mungbean

[attachment=16332]

Introduction
Mungbean[Vigna radiata(L.) Wilczek) is one of the most popular leguminous crops. It
originated in Southeast Asia and Indian subcontinent. Mungbean is an excellent source of
protein; it contains 20-25% protein about 2-3 times of cereals (Engel, 1977). Because of
its high protein content, it has also consumed in many forms; as boiled dry bean, bean
sprout, greenbeans, noodles and bean cakes (Park and Yang, 1983). It is also used as
fodder for livestock or often incorporated in soil for enriching the organic matter (Sadiq
et.al., 2006).

Materials and Methods
28 introduced lines from AVRDC and 2 uniform lines from national breeding program
were screened in 2004-2005 premonsoon season with standard variety Yezin-1,Yezin-6,
Yezin-7 and Yezin-9 at DAR, Food Legumes Section. Eight MYMV resistant lines were
selected and entered into the advanced yield trials at Yezin, Tatkone, Nyaungoo research
farms in 2005-2006 premonsoon season, using RCB design with four replications.

Results and Discussions
Yield and yield components were shown in Table 1. Among the tested varieties, 14 highly
resistant varieties, 6 resistant varieties, 4 susceptible varieties and 10 highly susceptible
varieties were found.Yezin-11(VR-03-5) had showed the highest yield about 2.40 ton per
hectare during 2004 – 2005 premonsoon season and 37 days to flowering, 10 pods per
plant, 11seeds per pod and 6.5 grams of 100 seeds weight were recorded. The reaction to
MYMV of Yezin-11(VR-03-5) was found highly resistant. This variety gave 38% yield
increase over standard check variety Yezin-6.

Conclusion
Based on the results, MYMV resistant variety Yezin-11(VR-03-5) gave the highest yield
about 4.57 ton per hectare and had greater stability in all tested areas. Therefore, this
variety Yezin-11(VR-03-5) should be used to replace the existing varieties which were
susceptible to MYMV during premonsoon season. This variety will certainly have much
impact on productivity and total production of mungbean In Myanmar.
