Integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN) is a mobile telecommunications technology, developed by Motorola, that provides its users with the benefits of a trunked radio and a cell phone. It was called the first mobile social network by many technology industry analysts. IDEN places more users in a given spectral space, compared to analog cellular and bidirectional systems, using voice compression and time division multiple access (TDMA).
An IDEN, or Integrated Dispatch Enhanced Network, is a radio service provided by some mobile phones that allows subscribers to talk to nearby subscribers who have similar phones without dialing their individual numbers. IDENs are often offered as a free service on modern mobile phones, such as Nextel, or as a premium service that can be activated, such as on SouthernLINC phones. IDENs are technically capable of supporting communications up to 6 miles in all directions but have a practical 1-2 mile limit due to interference from buildings and vegetation.
An IDEN that's working
IDEN services, also known as push-to-talk or a similar name, operate using a radio transmitter built into the mobile phone. A user can view a list of all mobile phones in the area that have IDEN enabled, in which case he / she can simply select the person from the list, press the IDEN button and start talking. If the user can not see a list of other IDEN enabled handsets, he will have to navigate the different frequencies available through IDEN and try to establish contact with his friends. The IDEN has 30 frequencies and allows 6 people to interact at each frequency.
Applications
IDEN can be used for a variety of purposes. For example, many modern phones allow users to connect to IDEN simply to speak without dialing a friend's number. In this view, IDEN uses practically the same technology as walkie talkies. IDEN can also be used by emergency personnel, professional drivers and retail employees in the store.
