ICU VENTILATOR

Introduction:

Ventilators are used for the patients having breathing problems or problem regarding to lungs. ICU ventilators are used for patients whose condition is critical. Ventilators are used for patient whose lungs are not in working condition or not working properly. It can be used for adult, pediatric and neonatal (all three kind) of patients. In all ventilators there are mainly two kind of modes: (1)-pressure control or support mode & (2)-volume control or support mode.
In pressure mode we set the pressure of ventilator according to the patient whether it is adult, pediatric or neonatal patient whereas the volume is automatically being set according to set pressure & in case of In volume mode we set the pressure of ventilator according to the patient whether it is adult, pediatric or neonatal patient whereas the pressure is automatically being set according to set volume.
Neonatal patient range is up to one month, pediatric patient range is from one month to 18 years and adult patient range is after18 years to till death. For example Siemens ventilator servo 300 is used for all three types of patients. Siemens ventilator servo 900c is used for adult and pediatric patients. Newport ventilator is used only for neonatal patient.
In case of adult patient volume mode is used, of neonatal patient pressure mode is used and in case of pediatric patient both volume and pressure mode is used.
Mainly ventilators have two functional parts:-
1- Control unit
2- Patient unit
Control unit and patient units are connected to each others.
Control unit:-The control unit consists of the front panel where the panel settings are made. It contains electronic circuits necessary to control the ventilator. From control unit information on front panel settings distributed to the regulating systems in the patient unit. Information concerning the /patients breathing is collected from the patient unit and processed to give information on the different front panel displays and to control the regulating systems.
Patient unit:-In the patient unit the control of flow and pressure is realized by a feedback system. The transducers continuously measure flow and pressure. The information is compared with front panel settings and a difference between the actual and the preset values results in correction signals to the control valves.

In most cases, an intensive care ventilator is a negative pressure ventilator, in which air or gas in the air passively to the lungs, or a positive pressure ventilator, with which the air mixture or air / gas is introduced into the patient's trachea and lungs. The use of a ventilator intensive care is usually indicated when the patient's natural breathing, spontaneous, is considered insufficient to sustain life.
