HYDROKINETIC POWER GENERATION
INTRODUCTION
There are plenty of power generation is being proposed using ocean energy….. Among them the new proposed power generation using pelamis wave genarator is cheap and more economical.
PELAMIS WAVE GENERATOR
Principles:
• The Pelamis is an attenuating wave energy converter designed with survivability at the fore. The Pelamis's long thin shape means it is almost invisible to hydrodynamic forces, namely inertia, drag, and slamming, which in large waves give rise to large loads. Its novel joint configuration is used to induce a tunable cross-coupled resonant response.
Why is it called ‘Pelamis’?
• A. The machine was named after Pelamis Platurus, a species of sea snake, because of its appearance and the way it moves in the water. For this reason it is sometimes nicknamed the Pelamis ’sea snake’ in the media, although its full name is the Pelamis Wave Energy Converter. Our new device, dubbed the ‘P2′, is so called as it is the ‘next generation’ of Pelamis devices.
OPERATION:
• The Pelamis device consists of a series of semi-submerged cylindrical sections linked by hinged joints. The wave-induced relative motion of these sections is resisted by hydraulic rams which pump high pressure oil through hydraulic motors via smoothing hydraulic accumulators. The hydraulic motors drive electrical generators to produce electricity. Power from all the joints is fed down a single umbilical cable to a junction on the sea bed.
PELAMIS PARTS
How big is Pelamis?
• Its full length is 180m, and tubes are 4m in diameter. Each of the five tubes is 33 – 38m long. In total the Pelamis is the same length as the Gherkin building in London is tall.
• Unballasted, the latest generation P2 Pelamis machine weighs ~650 tonnes. With ballast the weight increases to ~1300 tonnes.
What is The rating and capacity factor?
The Pelamis Wave Energy Converter is rated at 750kW. Depending on the wave resource at the site location, output is typically 25-40% of rated power over the course of the year, enough to power 500 homes
What makes Pelamis better than the other devices?
• A. The Pelamis concept offers three times the power capture per unit weight than other devices. This is closely related to capital cost and hence Pelamis offers the potential for the lowest c/kWh generating cost.
• Cheap and economical one
• Pollution free mainly no GHG emission.
How do you stop boats hitting it?
• The sites are delineated with navigational markers with lights and radar reflectors.
• Portugal and Orkney both have four cardinal markers delineating the site and project site will be marked on charts and notices to mariners.
• Wave Farm sites are obviously not located in shipping lanes.
CONCLUSION
• Among all the renewable energy conversion techniques, our proposed hydrokinetic power generation using pelamis wave generator seems to be a best power generation technique.
