The concept of using fibers as reinforcement in the concrete mix is not a new study. The use of fibers has been carried out since antiquity. There are different types of reinforced concrete with fiber that are classified according to the fiber that is used. If steel fiber is used, we obtain concrete reinforced with steel fiber. Likewise, nylon reinforced concrete, fiber reinforced concrete, carbon fiber reinforced concrete, etc. are some of the types.
A compound may be declared as a hybrid when two or more types of fibers are used in a combined matrix to produce a compound reflecting the benefit of each individual fiber used. This will ultimately provide a synergistic response to the entire structure. This concrete compound is called reinforced concrete with hybrid fiber (HFC).
The mechanical properties of the concrete are appreciably improved by using short elongated fibers. This increases the modulus of elasticity of the concrete. This will reduce the chances of brittleness and, therefore, the formation of small cracks, since small cracks are the main factors behind the propagation and formation of larger cracks.
The detachment of fibers or the possibilities of extraction are smaller, since this cause requires a great absorption of energy. This is why it provides resistance to fracture and resistance to HFC during dynamic and cyclic loads.
