66KV Grid Substation Jalandhar Introduction 66KV Jal network station is one of the very important energy reception and distribution centers of PSPCL is a vital link in the north region powr grid of the country. This substation is located in the sports and surgical complex near bawakhel on the slopes of Jalandhar distance from the city of about 7 KM bus stand and about 5 km from the Jal train station. City. The whole complex extends over an area of approx 15. marla, of which 5 marla have been occupied by the network substation comprising the switch yard, control room, communications center pseb carrier, compressor room , Battery room, and bay construction of the 150/25 ton crane. The remaining area has been used for residential complex, rest houses, club cum dispensary building, divinl and other office building, security guard booths and garages etc ...
The main purposes for the establishment of a substation are:
• Need to connect a generator to the transmission system: We have already mentioned that generators generate electricity at low voltage, mainly below 22 kV. But the bulk amount of energy can be transmitted at very long distance only at high or extra high voltage. Therefore, the generator transformers (GT) are used in the power plant to increase the voltage to the transmission level. Here the substation is not a separate entity, but is switchyard of the Central. These substations are quite complex. One can find here more numbers of transformers compared to other types of substations.
• Interconnect two or more transmission lines to two or more different voltage levels: In a transmission system is planned or required to facilitate the flow of energy between transmission lines at different voltage levels. These are transmission substations. For this purpose interconnect transformers (ICT) are used. Transmission substations run on Extra High Voltage (EHV). See figure below.
• Reduce the voltage to a lower level for a later transmission (secondary transmission) at an economic speed: Sometimes, for a shorter transmission of comparatively lower power, the transmission company may feel that it is economical to transmit at a level Of voltage between the standard level of transmission and distribution. Hence the requirement to establish the substation.
• Reduce voltage to a lower level to power a high voltage distribution network: these are the substations where the voltage is reduced to a voltage level adequate to form the main distribution network of a municipality.
• Low voltage low voltage for supply to consumers: These are area substations, where the voltage is lowered back to a level suitable for the consumption of the holds.
• HVDC substation: There are two main purposes of an HVDC substation. 1) Two different systems with different frequency can be connected by the HVDC coupling to facilitate the transfer of power from one side to the other side. 2) Bulk DC direct current transmission. HVDC substations have many advantages.
• Switching Substation: These are substations intended only for switching. The switching substation has no transformer. In an electrical system, these are few in numbers. Switching substations are designed to disconnect and connect a part of the network and facilitate maintenance.
