KOLKATA: For Jadavpur University engineering students, internship will no longer be merely a learning experience, but a paying one as well. JU - one of the country's premier technology universities - will pay students going on summer training up to Rs 10,000. Financial assistance will be provided to all students opting for summer internship with any company during the two-month summer break after completing their sixth semester from mid-May to mid-July.

"We have thought of offering stipends to students to meet the partial expenditure of travel cost, accommodation, food, stationery and registration fee. The highest limit of such assistance will be Rs 10,000 or the actual expenses incurred, whichever is lesser. The students will have to produce a report on the outcome of the training and a certificate of participation from the industry, indicating the nature and duration of the training," said Partha Pratim Biswas, nodal person, industry-institute interaction (III) activity in JU engineering faculty.

The initiative to pay students is a part of the Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (Teqip), which is run by the human resource development ministry. "In the III activity, teachers participate in the programmes as consultant or to train industry personnel. We want students to get involved in the summer internship where they would get exposure to the real work as done in the industries. It will help them know the industrial scenario and come face to face with real-life situations. This will help their skill development," Biswas added.

To ensure more participation from students, JU authorities felt that the ideal way was to make summer internships more meaningful and effective. "We have decided to introduce stipends to encourage participation of students for industry visits. Though summer training is in the academic curriculum, it is largely optional. The duration of internship could be from a month to two months. We want more students to spend time on such training programmes," said Biswas.

One of the benefits of summer internship is to get a better opportunity to find placements with renowned companies. Students seeking jobs and getting better remuneration after joining the summer internship course is higher.

"Around 900 students study in the 14 departments of JU. Students from all core faculties including electrical, electronics and telecommunication, chemical, civil, production and mechanical will be given the opportunity to join the internship. More than 70% students take part in the summer training programme apart from those who want to pursue higher studies. The stipend will be offered to even those who will be involved in developing their soft skills while on internship," said Biswas.

The format to apply for summer internship will be displayed in the university notice board. "After getting due signature from guardians, the application will be forwarded to the HOD's and then they will be screened by the Teqip monitoring body. The applications will then be placed before the industry for selection," informed Biswas.

Some of the companies who have already lined up to offer summer placements to students are - Samsung (RMD) in Bangalore, HP, Amazon India at Chennai, Goldman and Sachs in Bangalore, Steel Authority of India Limited at Bokaro, Microsoft Inc, IIT Madras, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in Germany. There are government companies like L&T and Gammon India offering summer training to JU students.

"The additional expenses if any more than Rs 10,000 will have to be supported by the students.

Those who will receive a stipend from companies will also be given the reimbursement by JU. The university has already allotted Rs 8 lakh for the purpose," said Biswas.
