how to apply for rfid card in tatasteel

Move over photo-identity cards, the radio-frequency identification (RFID) system is here.

In a major step towards overhauling its security apparatus, Tata Steel today started handing RFID cards to its employees. Around 19,000-odd employees, including officials and executives, will get the high-tech identification cards.

According to Tata Workers’ Union general secretary B.K. Dhinda, the initiative of introducing RFID technology for employees was the outcome of the 26/11 terror attacks on Taj Hotel in Mumbai in 2008. “It will be made mandatory for all employees to carry the card on company premises and while entry and exit. We are working out the finer details with the management. A decision will be taken in the next couple of days to implement the new system,” said Dhinda. “In fact, Tata Sons chairman Ratan N. Tata had suggested the technology which is foolproof,” he added.

Company sources said after initial discussions, the union gave its nod to the system, stating it would benefit both workers and the management.

“Tata Steel is one of India’s vital establishments which needs to be protected well. The radio-frequency identity cards will prevent entry of outsiders inside company premises. It will also help checking other anomalies,” said union president Raghunath Pandey.

He explained employees would continue to carry their existing gate-passes, as it would be required while they enter their attendance in respective departments. But they would be required to wear the RFID card like a badge.

“While entering company premises, the scanners installed at the gates will read the cards. If the card is valid, a beep sound will be emitted and the green light attached with the scanner will glow. If the card is false, a red light will glow, enabling security forces to stop the intruder,” said Pandey.

He added scanners would be installed at the company’s Sakchi, Bistupur and Burmamines entry points.

Notably, RFID is a technology that uses communication via radio waves to exchange data between a reader and an electronic tag attached to an object or human being for identification/tracking.

Experts said that RFID data can be read through human body, clothing and non-metallic objects.
