Anna University is a technical university in Tamil Nadu, India. The main campus is located in Guindy, Chennai. The Government of Tamil Nadu established the Technological University of Anna on September 4, 1978 through the Tamil Nadu Law of 1978. The new university was formed from the old faculty of engineering and technology of the University of Madras and consisted of of four institutes: Madras Institute of Technology, Faculty of Engineering, Guindy, Alagappa College of Technology and School of Architecture and Planning. In 1982, the current name "Anna University" was adopted.
In 2001 under the Anna University Amendment Act of 2001, the university became an affiliated university, taking under its wings all engineering schools in Tamil Nadu. This included six government engineering universities, three private institutions with government assistance and 426 self-funded universities. On February 1, 2007, as a result of a decision by the government of Tamil Nadu, the university was divided into six universities: university constituents: Anna University, Chennai, Anna University of Technology, Chennai, Anna University of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, Anna University of Technology, Coimbatore, the Technological University of Anna Tirunelveli and the Technological University of Anna, Madurai. The institutes were formally created in 2010. On September 14, 2011, a bill was approved to merge the universities. The merger became final in August 2012. In 2011 and 2012 the components were merged into a single affiliated university and the four regional universities continue to function as regional offices of the university.
