Codes of designation
Named features in the database are identified with designation codes whose first letter will give the most general type of feature:
• a = names of administrative units (counties, parishes, etc.)
• c = names of cultural characteristics (fields, meadows, hay lands)
• f = names of flora and landscape (forests, peatlands, etc.)
• h = hydronyms (names of bodies of water)
• o = orónimos (names of relief: mountains, valleys, etc.)
• p = populated places (cities, farms, etc.)
• r = names of regions (islands, layers, reserves, historical regions, etc.)
• u = urbonyms (names of urban areas: streets, parks, also organizations, towns typically in cities)
• x = other names (constructions, buildings, roads, bus stops, etc.)
For a detailed list of the designation codes, see the corresponding table (in .pdf format), the most frequent ones being:
• a1 = first-order administrative unit (in Estonia: county)
• a2 = second order administrative unit (in Estonia: urban or rural municipality)
• a9 = another division (in Estonia: church parish)
• c1 = field
• f1 = forest
• f2 = look
• h1 = sea
• h2 = lake
• h31 = sound, narrow
• h32 = bay, gulf
• h4 = river
• o1 = mountain, hill
• o2 = valley
• p0 = populated place (general type)
• p1 = urban settlement
• p2 = rural settlement (in Estonia: for unofficial settlement units only)
• p20 = official populated place (in Estonia: inner parish village, township, small district, village)
• p31 = locality (smaller place than village or district of the city)
• p32 = part of populated place
• p4 = farm, house of rural life
• r1 = island
• r21 = layer
• r22 = peninsula
• r3 = natural region
• r5 = another region
• u01 = city district
• u02 = neighborhood of the city
• u1 = street, square (direction unit)
• u2 = smallest place (unit without direction)
• u20 = smaller place with an official name
• u3 = institution, company, organization
• x1 = construction
• x2 = construction (commercial)
X21 = church
• x3 = path, path
• x4 = station or stop (x41 = railway station or stop, x4bu = bus stop, etc.)
NB! Urban (p1) and rural (p2) places differ only in Finland, Russia and some former Soviet republics; In other countries, populated places generally have a p0 code.
In addition to the designation codes, some characteristics may also contain the national list identification codes. These always begin with #. The first character after that will indicate the type of the list.
• #H = index of administrative and territorial units of Estonia (official)
• #J = list of Estonian lakes
• #M = list of aids to navigation (official)
• #S = list of maritime islands (according to A. Loopmann)
• #T = list of roads (official)
• #V = list of rivers and other streams (official)
