homemade ammonia absorption refrigeration system

One of the hardest things to go off without the transition grid is cooling. Most other operations can be replaced by means of manually, but keeping cold or frozen food in hot weather is a unique demand in the world today. In the past, demand for cooling has been limited because most food was prepared fresh each day and very little was kept for several days, partly due to lack of mechanical cooling. The fast pace of life, many now living have led people depend on frozen or refrigerated food products because of modern day work habits, leaving little time for home cooking. In the past, most women worked in the house all day, every day so that cooking was a natural phenomenon. Since the majority of women working outside the home now, fast food dominates most kitchens. Even for those who do a lot of cooking from scratch every day, the use of frozen products is very convenient.

The ability to raise its own meat, to cut it, and save it for future reference for a minute did not notice it was nothing less than revolutionary in the kitchen. While freezing is not the only way to preserve food, it is much easier than other methods for many products. The biggest problem with the frozen food is the need to keep it frozen at all times. When the power goes out, many people lose the contents of their freezers due to lack of electricity. Even after this occurs several times, most people still use the same means to keep their food in the refrigerator and is never given the idea by using another method that will save them, the losses and provide them frozen food and ice no matter how long the power has been turned off,Using propane refrigeration is a step above the compressor units driven by several reasons. Many absorption cooling devices can operate on 12v, 120v and propane power. Refrigerator, which can work on all three, such as items found in RVs and camper trailers can give you an advantage when the power goes out. You can run it on 120v for normal operation and during a power failure, you can switch on the 12v battery or propane tank outside the house. Absorption units are powered by heat so as long as you have a source of heat, they will continue to cool. Another interesting thing about these units is the fact that, unlike the compressor units which have many moving parts that can wear out or break, the absorption unit is not moving parts of the cooling device.

Absorption freezers mainly propane is used for some of the very small units, except that the presence of propane as a freezer compartment and a large tank can not provide continuous cooling matter what the weather does to power lines. In the absence of demand for electricity, propane is a natural fit for off-grid living. It can be expensive to fill the tank, but the minimum amount you need infrastructure compared to electricity can offset costs. Bonus when using propane is the fact that you can use the same tank to power a generator, fuel oven, heat your home, provide light and provide hot water. This is the best all around fuel source for off grid that you can get. Your propane equipment will continue to operate when the electrical system can be disabled. The only problem with propane is the fact that you can not make it yourself.

Possible replacement of the propane in a catastrophic situation would be to use a bio-gas, which you can produce yourself. The digester, which can produce biogas from manure is quite simple to construct and can allow someone to livestock to produce small volumes of gas to provide fuel for cooling and possibly cooking. This is a sustainable solution for off grid power, which requires a minimum of equipment.

Another alternative fuel is wood gas. It's good all around the fuel, you can do that works similar to propane. It can be used for many different items, such as generators, lights, refrigeration and even running car. In the past days, the city gas was produced from coal and providing lighting and cooking gas before the natural gas and propane. To start the absorption refrigerator for wood gas will take some experimentation to get the appropriate adjustments, but it can provide you with a non-electric version of the long-term catastrophic situation.

Another type of fuel to run the absorption refrigerator kerosene. Some kerosene units available today and use 2.5 gal. tank that will work for about 10 days on the fill. They use the burner found in some types of Aladdin's lamp to provide a heat source. With some experimentation would be to run it on alcohol, which you make yourself. This will give you another option in the long nonelectric situation. About 100 gallons of fuel will last you about a year and kerosene will be stored up to 10 years gives you plenty of time to use a large margin.

What if something happens to the power grid and electronics, and they never come back, and you have propane refrigerator or freezer? How would you ensure cooling even to a limited extent? The answer to this question may be a single ice cooling balloon. These units were first produced in the 1920s and is about as simple cooling device as you can possibly make. They are filled with water and ammonia, and charged by heating them for a small fire. The device is removed from the fire and allowed to cool. When it cools down enough ammonia to begin to recombine with the water you put an end to the coolant inside the chest, which contains your food. The device is cooled for about 24 hours, then you repeat the process. Factory units that were sold even had a cavity in the cooling balloon that will allow you to freeze the ice tray. These units require some effort and time every day, but they can be home and can provide you with cooling when nothing is available.

Another cooling system that operates like ice ball uses zeolite which is non-toxic. Zeolite is used, you can Self-cooling kegs of beer, now get. Self-cooling Beer keg beer will keep 20L of 41 degrees for 12 hours and can be recharged by heating it. Water is stored in one chamber and another zeolite powder. When the valve is opened between the water vapor which forms in vacuo and migrates to the zeolite is absorbed as it results in the diversion of cooling water in the other chamber. This is a good project to do at home from scratch, and is much safer than ammonia system.

Easier cooling device is a water-tight metallic container, which is loaded with items to be refrigerated and lowering it into a shallow well, until the bottom of the container a few inches is not in well water. Water will keep the food at the same temperature as the water, which is about 55 degrees year round.

Simple cooling device is used in third world countries is a pot in a pot. Lower several inches of clay pot covered with sand, the smaller clay pot inside the first set. The area between the two pots filled with sand to the top. Water is poured into the sand so long until it is completely saturated, the food is placed in the inner pot and the lid is placed on it. Evaporation will cause the inner tank to be cooler than the outside air helps to preserve food.I hope this information will give you some ideas to think about, if the situation prevents the use of a compressor driven cooling in the future.
