Home Security & Control Using GSM
Abstract
This graduate project describes mobile based remote home control and surveillance architecture. It is very suitable for remote home monitoring etc. The idea is to set up a central terminal equipped with a GSM Modem at home, which can be used to transmit/receive data and/or commands to and from the administrator/owner.
The hardware can sense anything from intrusion detection to gas leakages to fire outbreaks, etc. The data can then be sent to administrator/owner for appropriate action to be taken. The commands sent by administrator can be anything from Equipment/Device control to FAN speed control to Alarm threshold setting, etc. The entire home surveillance can be made remote using this architecture.
System Specifications / Features:
• Can store mobile numbers for all the administrators/owners who need to be contacted in case of emergency. E.g. both husbands as well as wife’s number can be stored and used to control server.
• Software can manage numbers according to situation or priority. E.g. a small increase in temperature can be reported to one of the members where as high changes can be reported directly to all the members.
• The system waits for a specified amount of time for response commands (SMS) from any of the owners, after which it takes necessary action itself. E.g. if there is no response received after 30 minutes after the temperature has risen, it will shut down the device (heater/geyser) itself.
• The system keeps track/log of all the activities. Hence detailed record of messages sent and received is maintained. Also a detailed track of all the activities (rise/fall in temperature, intrusion detection, etc.) is also maintained.
• The hardware is also equipped with alarm (buzzer) which can be set-off remotely.
• The hardware is equipped with ADC that can sense temperature, light intensity, gas concentration, proximity, intrusion, vibration based on the sensor attached.
• System receives commands from administrators which are then used to take necessary actions. E.g. a command like “ALR” can be used to activate the alarm.
• The system only responds to owners mobile numbers. SMS received from any other mobiles will be rejected.
• Moreover the communication via SMS is password protected. Hence any other user too cannot control the system from one of the owner’s mobile number. The message should contain the passkey before any command is to be sent.
• The central PC is equipped with a GSM modem/mobile phone which can be interfaced via AT command set.
• Complete control of the centralized PC/Workstation via SMS is supported.
• System can also be enhanced to send 2D/3D graphs to a Java enabled mobile device via GPRS (this will require that the user’s mobile support Java and must have GPRS service enabled. The server too would require a constant internet connection to upload or transmit the graphs).
