Aircraft makers have used fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) composites for almost 50 years, with the constant increase in usage every year, the industry detects the benefits provided to them. Although initially more expensive than traditional materials, efficiency, maintenance and fuel savings were so important that they could possibly exceed the initial cost of the aircraft.
Carbon and glass fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP, GFRP) is made up of a matrix of bonded carbon or glass fibers in a polymer resin which provides many desirable properties - the highest one-to-high-weight ratio, but the high hardness , Low thermal expansion, and good corrosion resistance.
A plane built using lighter FRP composites increases the cost savings of millions of dollars per year. For example, saving of aircraft maintenance is believed to be in the area of $ 30 to 40 million during the lifetime of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
Despite the advantages of FRP composites, these materials are extremely difficult for the machine. Can be the result of traditional processing methods, such as mechanical milling and drilling, resulting in spraying, heat loss, dissection, fiber pull-out and serious wear for the equipment. Recently, water jet cutting has been investigated, but still some fiber causes delimitation among other practical limitations. For example, it is necessary for a pilot hole when the process starts anywhere except for the edge of the material.
As the process of removing non-contact materials, laser machining provides solutions to highlight some issues. However, until recently, laser-content related contact was not widely understood for this application. JK Lakers has done a study with Liverpool John Moores University to learn more.
In order to enable researchers to better understand the interaction between laser and material, machining used two laser sources with different beam characteristics. Percussion drilling was done with a fiber distributed, high peak power Nd: using the YAG laser (JK 300D) with a drilling nozzle. The cutting trial was done with 200 W, a cutting nozzle with single mode fiber laser (JK 200FL). The same laser was used in traponing and milling tests but with scanning head.
