The Handwritten Character Recognition System using neural networks is developed using the MATLAB Neural Network and Image Processing toolbox. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is the translation of optically scanned bitmaps of printed or written text characters into character codes, such as ASCII. This is an efficient way to convert printed materials into data files that can be edited and otherwise manipulated into a computer. This is the technology used by libraries and government agencies to make long documents quickly available electronically. Advances in OCR technology have stimulated their increasing use by businesses. For many document entry tasks, OCR is the most cost-effective and fastest method available. And every year, technology releases acres of storage space once delivered to filing cabinets and boxes filled with paper documents. Before you can use OCR, the source material must be scanned using an optical scanner (and sometimes a specialized PCB) to read on the page as a bitmap (a dot pattern). You also need software to recognize the images.
